The Oregon Coastline.
I had the privilege to head up to Seattle late last spring with my good friends Ted and Kelly for JBVO's 30th birthday bash on the Oregon Coastline. It was amazing. It was an awesome week full of good people, good food and amazing country. Overall a great trip to connect and reconnect with friends old and new. It was also the perfect ending to a long, long, long semester of grad school. Special thanks to TBVO & Kelly, for taking me along with them from Colorado on this travel. It is great to have such wonderful friends. As well as JBVO, & UP Mike for having me at their crib in Seattle. PSYCHED.

Took an epic trip to Snowmass, CO over the continental divide on the way to see my brother, (disclosure: who is quite possibly the coolest person I know) last week. He has been making fine art furniture and assisting craftsman at Anderson Ranch this past Summer and Fall. It was a much needed trip. The Aspen trees were turning color, making the jaw dropping views even better.

Becca, Sophie and myself met on the Gettysburg battle field in Pennsylvania last month or so. It was great to have them down to Maryland. We toured Baltimore went down to see my friend Phil on the Gallant Green and ate some really good breakfast at the Blue Moon Cafe in Fells Point. It was great to have a mini road trip adventure with the ones you love.

At last I was able to catch the Cherry Blossoms in D.C. this spring. Being the history nerd that I am, I couldn't pass on the opportunity to catch the Japanese cherry blossoms surrounding the tidal pool with Becca. We wanted to catch the American History Museum as well but between the blossoms, fresh air and tourists we were tired out. This gives us yet another reason to return.

I couldn't stop myself from making this picture yesterday morning. Firstly they can't handle snow in these parts. We only had an inch of snow at this point. It seems as if the whole society grinds to a halt in a ice/snow event in mid-atlantic states.
These people don't know anything about snow or ice for that matter.
Oh well. It was fun to cruise around the county looking for pictures. I have to say it made me reminisce the substantial blizzards of my Michigan youth.

Today I walked the ramparts of Fort McHenry thinking of the ghosts of the War of 1812, America's military past and my America.
What a wild country.

The British bombardment of the fort from the Patapsco River in the Battle of Baltimore inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem sung to the tune of "To Anacreon in Heaven" that became the "Star-Spangled Banner."

I had the honor of attending the 32nd Annual Turkey Shoot. A neighborhood potluck on Thanksgiving morning in which friends of the family meet up, share food and shoot targets with bee bee guns. It is a blast. I look forward to attending every year.

I had the privilege to attend the Eddie Adams Workshop a few short weeks ago. It was an incredibly inspiring, exhausting, and spiritual experience. Listening and learning to some of the most intelligent photographers and colleagues.

Ida Class of 1937 - Reunion-

"I remember when they flipped that old model T near Petersburg," Helena Schrader of Monroe said while conversing over stories of driving around Ida with former classmate Marie Knab of LaSalle during their 1937 Ida class reunion lunch at the Haystack Restaurant in Ida, Mich. Thursday. The group meets once or twice a year. Five of the former classmates met Thursday 71 years after their graduation from Ida High School. "No one wanted to let their parents know that they tipped the car over," Schrader said.

Went on a little adventure to the old Packard Automotive Plant on Grand Boulevard in the 'D' . It was the first structurally reinforced concrete factory in the world built by Albert Kahn in 1907. The Packard was the Luxury car of the 1930's.
Packard was all but gone after 1958 as one industrial automotive company ate another in the 50's. I thought I could hear the ghosts of the industrial age as we wondered through out one of the 74 buildings that are or once were on the site.

Thought this was funny. Had the opportunity to make some pictures at a decoration session for a local high school. It was pretty elaborate. They even decorated the bathrooms.

I was the lone man to shoot Midland High's trip to the state semifianls down in Lansing. This is how the morning began. A pre-practice resting ritual outside of the team locker room, turned into a full out celebraton after a last minute 31-28 victory to send the team to the state finals in the "D" at Ford Field.

Mountain Workshops

Leaping from rail to rail, 6-year-old Clay Erwin plays in his backyard on Maple Avenue in Danville, Kentucky with pal Cole Verhoven, 6, of Danville. "The miniature house was a gift from Santa Claus. There was a note that said, "Your other present is out back." It was so cool. It was the best. They were like, "Oh my gosh!," Clay's father Bill Erwin said.

I had the opportunity last week to experience the Mountain Workshops in Danville, Kentucky. My first experience in a workshop setting couldn't have been better. It was a four-day blowout consisting of shooting a picture story and found features in the town of Danville.

On top of that each participant has their work critiqued by photographers who've only won Pulitzer Prize's, POYS and so forth. The connection I made with my story subjects in that short time was incredible.

My story was about internationally adopted children and their parents who started an adoption agency out of their home. It was a mind-blowing experience that I can only build on in daily life beyond making pictures.

A Tribute to Nic Paradise - Part 3

A great tribute to Paradise. One of my earliest and best friends passed away in August. He was a true renegade of his time. Great memories arose when looking back at the skate spots we frequented in our grade school years. In the past few years my friendship Nic had drifted apart mainly because I was in college. Only to shoot the Griffiti portirats last fall was one of the last times we spent significant time hanging out. Reguardless, It brings back great memories of a good friend and talented individual. Thanks for putting it together Justin. RIP Nic.
